Meet Melissa --

Melissa is a senior at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing, where she is obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During the summer of 2021 Melissa was accepted into the LNA Internship program working on 1 West Unit. For 14 weeks, Melissa was one of thirty interns working full-time at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, while embracing both technical and professional development. Through the program Melissa provided direct patient care and served as an integral part of the care team. Upon starting the program Melissa was hopeful to further develop her nursing practice and build experience and clinical skills. When the program completed in August 2021, Melissa returned to Baylor University, confident that she had made the right choice going into nursing.

We are so fortunate to have interns like Melissa who make an impact on patient care and the nursing teams during their summer experience.

“This experience really pushed me out of my comfort zone and strengthened my nursing practice. Coming out of this program, I felt much more confident going into my last year of nursing school with the valuable patient interaction that I had gained this summer. I gained valuable feedback from the nurses on my floor as well as from the learning sessions that were included in the program.”

Meet Jennifer --

As a rising senior studying genetics and Italian studies at the University of New Hampshire Jennifer was looking to gain experience in the field of cytogenetics in a large hospital laboratory. With a desire to become a geneticist, Jennifer searched out and was selected for the 2021 college summer internship program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

Admittedly shy and reserved, Jennifer pushed herself not only in the technical skills but through the professional development curriculum and saw much growth over the summer.

As an intern, Jennifer had firsthand experience working in the lab, adding value and experience to the team, engaging in a comprehensive professional development curriculum, and learning from many professionals throughout the healthcare system.  This experience solidified her next steps and future career. Just recently she applied for and accepted a position at Dartmouth-Hitchcock post-graduation.

“Interning at DHMC was a fantastic experience. I was able to learn about and work in a clinical laboratory while developing skills and technical knowledge that I could use later in my career. I strengthened the laboratory skills I learned at school, and the internship helped me figure out my career path after graduation. My supervisors both in the lab and for the internship were super helpful, and when I expressed interest working at DHMC, they helped me find my job!”

Meet Maureen --

Maureen has been an RN and nurse manager in various clinics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock since 2002. As an integral clinic partner setting up the D-H Workforce Readiness Institute Medical Assistant Apprenticeship in 2014, Maureen's skills, expertise, and knowledge led her to be the perfect person to lead in the classroom. Since joining the WRI in 2019, Maureen has been an essential part of the curriculum and apprenticeship competency building for our MAs throughout the healthcare system. She is always looking for new resources to make learning accessible and attainable for our students.

Maureen is dedicated to students' success professionally, technically, and academically. She is extremely creative and flexible and shares her wealth of knowledge and experience with her students openly and enthusiastically. Maureen creates an active learning environment, culminating in the CCMA pass rate for her students being significantly higher than the national average! In addition to our MA programs, she teaches courses through the Colby Sawyer College Associate's Degree pathway.

The WRI is grateful to have Maureen's knowledge and skillset to help our MA students gain the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to thrive in the classroom and clinics.

Meet Eric --

Eric is a Unit Patient Care Assistant and LNA Trainee on the Inpatient Surgery unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon. Before joining DHMC, Eric worked at a New York City Comedy Club for over 10 years and has a background in Fine Art. Eric joined the D-H Workforce Readiness Institute Nurse Assistant Training program with the desire to make a career change that would speak to his skill set and broaden his knowledge around heath care.

Eric brings a level of humor, kindness and can-do attitude, no matter the situation. He decided to take on the optional, non-clinical role of a Unit Patient Care Assistant upon being accepted to the LNA training program in order to bring his hours to full-time and increase his clinical experience. While training to become a Licensed Nurse Assistant Eric is gaining valuable work experience with patients and the care team as a full time, benefited employee at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. We are so fortunate employees like Eric who are looking to change careers, build their skills, and having a meaningful impact in patient care.

“I’m so happy that I opted to work as a Unit Patient Care Assistant while participating in the LNA Training Program. While I have a lot of life experience working in higher education, fine art and the NYC comedy scene, a hospital unit was new environment for me and the UPCA position helped to acclimate myself into my anticipated role as an LNA.”
